Sunland Park Debates Controversial Dispensary Proposal Near State Line
A proposed retail project in Sunland Park, New Mexico, has ignited community debate as the City Council prepares to vote on it. The centerpiece of the proposal is Cronica Cannabis Dispensary, located at 8301 Emory Drive, just steps from the Texas border. But it’s not just a dispensary—it’s part of a broader development called Station X, which also includes a cannabis lounge and a Bucks Cabaret.
The plan was originally set for review at a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting last week, but it was postponed after several industry opponents brought legal representation. The city chose to delay the discussion until its own attorney could attend.
Back in the April 9 meeting, the Commission had already placed restrictions on the project, barring outdoor consumption and adult entertainment components—essentially blocking the Bucks Cabaret aspect for now.
Still, residents are concerned. During public comment, one woman voiced fears about noise, traffic, and public safety. She also raised the issue of jurisdiction, given the proximity to Texas: “If a law is broken, if someone gets sick—who responds? New Mexico or Texas?”
The City Council will make a final decision during their meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, held at 1000 McNutt Rd., Suite A. The outcome could shape how border towns like Sunland Park balance economic opportunity with community standards.
